The old farmer watches the clown, a look of concern on his face. As bedtime nears, the baby clown looks sad. Together, the farmer and clown eat and wash up. Subsequent spreads show a puzzled, uncertain farmer walking with the smiling clown back to the farmer’s small, plain, gray house. The train goes over a bump and in doing so a baby clown bounces right out of the train and lands in front of the farmer. An old farmer looks out over a vast field as a brightly colored train passes by. Rendered in beiges and grays, the field and sky look old and lifeless. The opening spread shows a vast, flat field. The telling of the story relies on Frazee’s pencil and gouache illustrations.
